Do I need a Microsoft Access® license on every
machine I install Catalyst?
If you install the Access Runtime, you will not need a licensed
copy of Microsoft® Access on each machine. The Access Runtime is
available for free download from the Catalyst evaluation download
page. If you plan to modify Catalyst, you will need the Full Edition
of Catalyst and at least one licensed copy of Microsoft Access.
How do I avoid the security warning when
opening Catalyst with Access 2003?
Microsoft Access® 2003 employs what it
refers to as "sandbox" mode to block macros and code that may
harm your computer. To avoid the security warning, it is
necessary to either turn-off sandbox mode or code-sign the
front-end database with a digital certificate. All Basic
Editions are digitally signed with a code-signing certificate;
however, all Full Editions of the software are not
digitally-signed to enable users to customize the front-end
database.
To avoid the security warning with Full
Editions of the software, you can turn-off sandbox mode by
changing the macro security setting to Low or use another
version of Microsoft Access. If you do not intend to modify the front-end database,
you can request a code-signed database by contacting Catalyst
Manufacturing Support. If you have customized the front-end
database, this service is provided at a nominal fee.
When first opening a digitally signed database
Microsoft Access 2003, you will be prompted with a security warning
indicating "This file has been digitally signed by Catalyst
Manufacturing. Do you want to open this file or cancel the
operation?" Prior to clicking the Open button, mark the checkbox
"Always trust files from this publisher and open them
automatically". This will install the digital certificate in your
list of Trusted Publishers so the security warning is not displayed
the next time you open Catalyst.
What are the considerations when using Access 2007?
Catalyst Manufacturing® versions 4.86 and higher
are compatible with Microsoft Access® 2007; however, there are known
issues and limitations to consider when upgrading from a prior
version of Access. These are summarized below.
-
Unlike Access 2003, which required a
code-signing digital certificate to avoid the security
warning message when opening the Catalyst Full version
database, Access 2007 allows an administrator to specify
Trusted Locations in the Microsoft Access Trust Center and
enable any macros or scripts executed in the specified path.
This feature makes it easier to make Catalyst database
design changes and promote to the production environment.
-
Ensure you have installed
the latest service packs for Office 2007 (SP2 as of the
writing of this topic). The latest service packs can be
downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Office web site.
If you have not installed Office 2007 SP2, you will not be
able to export Catalyst reports to Excel.
-
Users have reported latency issues
and slow system response when using Access 2007 despite
installing the latest service packs. These issues are
resolved when upgrading to Access 2010, however.

How do I setup Trusted Locations if I'm
using the
Access Runtime?
Unfortunately, the Access 2007 or Access 2010 Runtime
versions do not provide the Access Options screen to establish
Trusted Locations directly. To establish Trusted Locations using the
Access Runtime, please refer to the steps below.
-
Using Windows Explorer, browse to the
C:\Program Files\Catalyst
folder on the client PC. For Windows 64-bit machines, browse
to the C:\Program Files
(x86)\Catalyst folder.
-
Locate the
CreateTrustedLocation_CatalystMFG.reg file in the Catalyst
folder, right-click the file, and select Edit or
Open with > Notepad from the shortcut menu to open the
file in edit mode.
-
If using the Access 2007 Runtime, change
"14.0" to "12.0" in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER line. If using a
Windows 64-bit machine, change "C:\\Program
Files\\Catalyst\\" to "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Catalyst\\"
on the last line.
-
Close and save changes made to the
CreateTrustedLocation_CatalystMFG.reg file.
-
Double-click the file to run and update
the registry and establish the Catalyst folder as a Trusted
Location. You must be logged in as a system administrator to
make registry changes.
